Felony assault charges against drunk driver, passenger injured

Alabama State Police took an Ashford woman into custody on charges of first degree assault and driving under the influence stemming from a car crash in which a passenger was seriously injured. The driver was detained in the Houston County Jail on $60,000 bail.

The Dec. 13 incident happened on Houston County Road 75 in Ashford when the 40-year-old woman who was driving an Isuzu Rodeo was involved in a single-vehicle crash that caused serious injury to a passenger, according to an Alabama state trooper. The accident victim suffered neck and back injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Alcohol is suspected to have contributed to the crash, according to the state trooper. The suspected drunk driver also has two prior felony theft convictions, according to records.

A person who becomes involved in a serious alcohol-related crash could suffer traumatic head and spinal cord injuries, rendering the individual temporarily or permanently disabled. Many accident victims lose the ability to live independently following catastrophic crashes. Some require long-term medical care, rehabilitative therapy and assistance to maintain a reasonable standard of living.

A personal injury attorney may be able to help survivors of car accidents seek compensation for losses that they have suffered due to the negligent and reckless driving behavior of others. The costs of medical care and rehabilitative therapy, in addition to lost wages, benefits and the ability to earn a living may be sought. These accident survivors might benefit from filing a personal injury claim.
