Homeopathic teething products linked to children's deaths

There are new warnings by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this week about certain types of teething products. The FDA issued a safety alert in 2010 about teething tablets manufactured by Hyland's. Now, the FDA's warning includes all homeopathic teething tablets and gels that contain belladonna.

The deaths of 10 children may have been caused by homeopathic teething tablets and gels with this dangerous ingredient. In addition, the FDA received reports of 400 children suffering serious medical problems after ingesting these teething products. The FDA is investigating the cause of these deaths and injuries. While the FDA did not issue a recall of the products, it urges parents not to use them.

What is the danger of belladonna?

Belladonna is a plant that is extremely poisonous. Also called deadly nightshade, belladonna can be lethal if not used appropriately.

Belladonna poisoning symptoms may include:

  • Dry mouth
  • High temperature
  • Increased heart rate
  • Skin flushing or dry skin
  • Confusion
  • Hallucinations
  • Drowsiness (in infants)

If your child exhibits these symptoms and has been in contact with teething gels and tablets that contain belladonna, seek medical care immediately.

Holding manufacturers of defective drugs accountable for their actions

When drug companies do not adequately test their products, serious injuries or death may be the result of their negligence. Consumers can take action to hold these companies liable for the damage they cause.

Filing a lawsuit will not reverse the harm you or your family suffer, but it can help you achieve a measure of justice. It can also prevent similar things from happening to other people.

You can fight drug companies and other negligent corporations with the help of an experienced personal injury lawyer. You may be just one person, but telling your story can make a difference.
