Claire’s makeup sets recalled for possible asbestos contamination

Like any toys, children’s makeup sets are supposed to be fun, and more importantly, safe. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.

In late December, the makeup and jewelry store Claire’s announced a recall of nine of their products. The makeup sets are being recalled because they allegedly contain asbestos, which is a carcinogen that can result in deadly cancers. You can see the list of the recalled products here. Claire’s is offering refunds to anyone who purchased the tainted makeup.

The USA Today reports that a similar recall from the store Justice occurred in July 2017. In this case, some of their makeup products allegedly contained heavy metals and asbestos.

Why should we hold manufacturers accountable for dangerous products?

The use of asbestos in a children’s product is inexcusable. While using the tainted makeup in this recall may not result in any health problems, it is still not something you want your children exposed to.

Asbestos is a dangerous substance that has long been linked to cancers of the lung and peritoneal organs. It also can cause mesothelioma, a cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, heart and abdomen. People exposed to asbestos typically do not develop mesothelioma until 20 to 40 years after exposure.

When dangerous or defective products cause illness or injury, you can take action against the manufacturer and retailer. People affected by the product may seek financial compensation for medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, pain and suffering, and additional losses. Speaking with a lawyer will help you understand your options.
