Last week, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors Corporation announced that they are recalling millions of vehicles. The problem is with the engines, which were manufactured at an auto parts plant in Alabama.
In the U.S., the two companies are recalling 1.19 million vehicles. The vehicles with the engine defects are:
- Hyundai: 2013-14 Sonatas and 2013-14 Santa Fe Sport SUVs
- Kia: 2012-14 Sorentos, 2011-14 Optimas and 2011-13 Sportage SUVs
The car companies say that a manufacturing problem is the cause for the engine defect. The faulty engines have the potential to stall due to metal debris in the crankshafts. If an engine stalls unexpectedly, drivers and passengers are at risk for an accident.
What should you do if you own one of the recalled vehicles?
The recalls are set to begin in late May. If you get a recall notice, be sure to make an appointment to get your vehicle checked as soon as possible. Kia and Hyundai will replace the faulty engines at no charge to you.
If you notice a knocking sound from your car or SUV while accelerating, contact the dealership immediately. This may be a sign that your engine has the defect in question.
