Pension Advances: The New Payday Loans?

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau today issued a strong warning to people who depend on their pensions to cover day-to-day expenses.  The CFPB says some retirees who are facing financial problems are responding to ads for cash advances on their pensions, sometimes with devastating results.

Arbitration in Consumer Financial Contracts

When someone obtains a consumer financial product such as a credit card, a checking account, or a payday loan, he or she typically gets the company's standard form written legal contract.  There is no negotiating the terms of these type of contracts.  The terms are generally offered on a take-it-or-leave-it basis.  And these contracts now commonly contain what is called an arbitration clause, according to a preliminary study on arbitration by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Rental Car Companies & Damaging Practices

An investigative journalist for the Washington Post recently took a hard look at potential fraud in the car rental industry.  After renting and returning a car from  rental companies, several customers claim that they received a bill for damage to the vehicle even though they did not damage the vehicle in any way.
