Alabama is home to many people who enjoy spending time on the roads, but it hasn’t always been as safe to go for a drive. The Alabama Department of Public Safety reports traffic wreck statistics each year based on their locations in the local rural or urban areas. The earliest information is from 1971, while the most current information is from 2009. Looking at just 2005 and 2009, you can see a great difference in the number of crashes within the state.
Over time, the number of accidents in Alabama has fallen. According to the information on the chart, in 2005, for instance, there were 143,948 total wrecks in Alabama. In 2009, that number dropped to 123,690. Of those wrecks, 1,134 involved fatalities in 2005, while only 848 included fatalities in 2009.
What does that say about the state of Alabama’s roadways and the safety of the state’s highways? They are essentially becoming safer for drivers, with the amount of accidents, injuries and fatalities dropping each year. The drop in crashes could also be related to the increase in safety belt usage or the education of people in the state about drunk driving or other negligent driving acts. No specific reason was mentioned for the decline in the statistics.
