Readers may be familiar with drunk driving checkpoints, but Huntsville, Alabama police officials recently added a new spin to this approach by setting up traffic safety checkpoints. Officials analyzed data to identify heavy crash locations, and then set up police in those designated areas. If an individual is stopped at one of these checkpoints, he or she should be prepared to present a driver’s license, vehicle tag registrations and proof of insurance.
The checkpoints will target all kinds of offending behavior, including speeding, running stop signs or red lights, drinking and driving, or other traffic violations. Authorities will also respond to reports of suspected drunk driving or erratic driving behaviors by individuals who call the police department’s main telephone number.
The checkpoints are an important reminder of the many forms that negligence can take behind the wheel. Even simple distraction that pulls a driver’s eyes from the flow of traffic could result in a crash. Other aggressive behaviors, such as speeding or running red lights, also endanger others on the road.
