A deadly collision on AL-21 north of Sylacauga during the late evening hours of March 1 is still being investigated by state police. As is often the case immediately after many car accidents, the chain of events leading up to the collision is not apparent, but it has been revealed that a 35-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were killed in the wreck. Five other individuals were injured, four of which were children.
The accident reportedly happened at about 11:15 as the two adults and the four children were traveling on the highway 11 miles north of Sylacauga in a Ford Focus. The other car involved was a Ford Fusion, and the driver, a 64-year-old man, was also injured in the collision. It is not yet known which driver caused the wreck.
Three girls, a 6-year-old, 7-year-old and 11-year-old, were transported to Children’s Hospital along with a 1-year-old boy for treatment of unspecified injuries. The driver of the Fusion was taken to the Coosa Valley Medical Center.
The outcome of the state trooper’s investigation may have significant implications for the survivors of the accident. It has not been established that the children belong to the deceased pair or even if the two deceased individuals were a couple, but if this is the case, the children’s lives may drastically change with the tragic and sudden loss of their parents. If it can be established that the other driver was at fault, the children’s relatives may pursue a wrongful death case on their behalf to recover compensation for the loss of the two adults that covers funeral expenses and the children’s medical expenses. Similarly, the injured driver of the other vehicle may be eligible for a personal injury claim stemming from the accident if the investigation pinpoints one of the deceased adults as liable. His or her estate may in turn be responsible for furnishing the injured man with sums for his medical expenses, property damage and pain and suffering.
