Recent recalls of lettuce, cauliflower, and ground beef and turkey have people wondering what is safe to eat. Unfortunately, there is yet another recall of a dangerous food product, and this time, it is fruit. Jac. Vandenberg, Inc., has recalled nearly 3,300 cartons of plums, nectarines and peaches due to a possible listeria contamination. The recall affects 19 states, including Alabama.
The fruit sold in Alabama was in ALDI stores under the names Fresh Nectarines, Fresh Peaches and Fresh Plums. These fruits are packaged in two-pound bags under the brand Rio Duero. PLU stickers 4044, 3035 and 4378 list Chile as the country of origin.
If you purchased these items, you can return them to the store and receive a refund for the full amount of your purchase. While there are not any reports of listeria infections yet, it is best to be safe and return the fruit.
Why is this contamination dangerous?
Listeria monocytogenes can result in serious or fatal illnesses. Most people who get sick from listeria experience symptoms that may include:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea and abdominal pain
- High fever
- Bad headaches
However, there may be more serious problems for people with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, children and the elderly. In these cases, listeria may result in deadly infections and complications.
