Every year, thousands of car accidents and near accidents across Alabama are caused by distracted driving. A driver who takes their eyes and focus off the road even for a few seconds endangers the lives of everyone on the road. One recent fatal car accident proves the risks and dangers associated with distracted driving.
A car driven by a 37-year-old woman crashed into a large truck driven by a 39-year-old man. Both vehicles were traveling eastbound when the car driven by the 37-year-old woman veered into the truck’s lane. The 37-year-old woman sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene of the accident.
A four-year-old girl, who was in the 37-year-old woman’s car at the time of the crash, also sustained injuries. She was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The 39-year-old truck driver was not injured in the crash.
Alabama State Troopers are still investigating potential factors that may have contributed to the accident. They believe, however, that the 37-year-old woman was texting while driving when the fatal accident occurred.
This tragic accident serves as a reminder to Alabama drivers that texting and driving is dangerous and can result in series and even fatal accidents. Sadly, in this case, distracted driving cost one woman her life.
As of Aug. 1, 2012, texting while driving is illegal in Alabama. This accident, however, proves that some Alabama drivers continue to engage in the dangerous and distracting behavior. Accidents caused by distracted drivers, many of whom are texting, often lead to those involved sustaining series or even fatal injuries.
In order to remain safe and alert, Alabama drivers would be wise to store cellphones while driving and only use a cellphone while driving in the event of an emergency.
