A man is facing multiple charges after his vehicle collided with a police car. Four other people, including an officer, were injured in the crash, and another man died at the scene. The accident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on a Tuesday night on Highway 82 in Alabama. The case has been turned over to the Alabama Department of Public Safety by the Tuscaloosa Police Department, whose officers were responding to a burglary call when they were involved in the fatal collision.
A 30-year-old man was charged with probation violation, felony eluding and leaving the scene of an accident in an incident that began as an alleged burglary call in an apartment complex located off of Skyland Boulevarde. When officers responded, they discovered an unspecified number of people getting into a white SUV that left the scene in spite of officers’ efforts to stop it, according to media sources. The SUV struck another vehicle on its way out of the parking lot. Reports do not indicate if anyone was hurt in the alleged hit and run accident.
Police chased the SUV down Skyland Boulevarde and onto McFarland Boulevarde south where the SUV collided with the police car. According to state troopers, a passenger in the SUV was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Reports indicate that he was not wearing a seat belt. Two other occupants of the SUV were treated for their injuries at DCH and released. A fourth suffered only minor injuries and was treated at the scene. A Tuscaloosa officer was also hurt in the accident; however, media sources do not indicate the extent of his injuries.
